I am pleased to welcome you to the webpage of the Department of Publishing Studies!
40 years ago, UNESCO and the Government of Ghana introduced the Book Industry (now the Publishing Studies) programme in the Faculty of Art with the mandate of building capacity through training professionals for the book industry in Sub-Saharan Africa. So, we welcome both local and international students interested in pursuing academic programmes in publishing studies.
We train undergraduate and postgraduate students to develop competitive skills, abilities, and knowledge through integrating innovative technologies that will equip them to function in publishing and related industries. While undergraduate students acquire competencies and transferable skills required to function and succeed in careers in publishing and related fields, those who pursue an MPhil in Publishing add on to their competencies, research skills that equip them to carry out relevant research to promote socioeconomic development and prepare them for both professional and academic careers. The department also offers short courses for industry practitioners in book, magazine and journal production: content development, editorial production, design and illustration, book marketing and publishing management.
Over the years, the department has collaborated and received support from Oxford Brookes University through the British Council, African Publishing Network, Ghana Book Development Council, Ghana Publishers Association, Ghana Association of Writers, Ghana Printers and Paper Convertors and our Alumni as the department evolved and strived to fulfil its mandate.
Our dedicated faculty and staff support students and other academics who are interested in publishing and its related activities. Our alumni have permeated the industry in Ghana with others breaking into new territories on the local and international scene.
2024 is a remarkable year for us because the Publishing Studies programme is 40 years old! Reflecting on our journey of offering publishing education in Ghana, we celebrate our successes, reflect on our challenges and chart a new path for the next 40 years! We appreciate the support of industry partners and our alumni who have been good ambassadors of the programme. I salute all staff; the founding teachers, both retired and those still in service, for contributing to the training of the human resource that contributes to the development of our society.
To prospective students; explore our web pages and acquaint yourselves with our undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. We will happily answer your queries and listen to your feedback.
To our alumni: The seeds sown have germinated and are bearing fruits. As we celebrate 40 years of publishing education in Ghana, we invite you all to reach out and support us in every shape or form - it is time to come home!
Best wishes!
Dr (Mrs) Lucy Afeafa Ry-Kottoh
